Is Food art?

Is all Food art?

Before viewing the two videos posted on “Fast Food” and “Slow Food” my initial opinion was that all food was art regardless of where it came from. Although after watching the videos my opinion changed drastically. The first video discusses fast food and where it comes from, how it is made, and its final presentation. In the Slow Food video it discusses how fresh home food is prepared and the final visuals of what it looks like when it is cooked. In my opinion slow food should be considered art, rather than fast food. The textures, colors, and shapes of the food in the slow food video represent art much more than the frozen stiff food that is shown on the fast food video. The slow food video represents touch, feeling, sight, smell, and taste which is much more effective than the fast food video. The fast food video represents the same sense but in a much less meaningful way. The audience hears the narrator discuss how the meat comes from thousands of different cattle, and how the fries are processed with many different chemicals to improve the taste and texture. In no way is this art due to it not having the basic colors or texture but because the food itself does not represent the main components of art (color, shape, texture), etc. “The filling running down the side in jewel drips” (2:50). “Contain meats from hundred of different countries, ground together in gigantic vats” (0:34). The first quote is much more appealing and artistic rather than the second quote taken from “Fast Food” The theory of art that describes my point of view that Dissanayake’s discussed is postmodernism. Since postmodernism views art as an interpretation that one can form.

  1. Hi, Courtene. we are on the same track thinking that it is worth enjoying the tasty of slow food no matter the textures, colors, and shapes. Besides, you appreciated the slow food about the touch, feeling, sight, smell, and taste, which makes u like a authentic chef. As Elizabeth Telfer mentions that “our reaction is aesthetic, in many simple cases,if it based solely on how the object appears to the senses” (p.9).Slow food is so pretty as art because it have aesthetic reaction for sure. However, in my opinion, fast food can also be art. Ellen Dissanayake’s theory that art interpretation means that individual experience the world by their own cultural appreciation and sensibilities from the point of postmodernism,(Dissanayake, 1991, p19). Fast food like McDonald’s originated in the US and it may satisfy the needs for people to some extent , which is one of the reason that it still exists and popular in US. In my point of view, we should appreciate all of the food, which are valuable art products for us indeed.
