Perspectives

Many of these questions were crafted around the idea that identity shapes one’s perspective of the world. Please introduce yourself with your name, major (if you have declared one or have one in mind), and describe any aspects of your identity you wish to share. How do you hope your perspective will contribute to the CHC community?

23 Thoughts.

  1. My name is Maurisa Rapp and I am from Phoenix, Arizona. I have declared my major as human physiology in the dreams of one day attending medical school. I am an independent, self-driven, and outgoing individual. I enjoy keeping myself busy with extracurriculars, such as tennis and volunteering, and spending time with my friends. Perspectives I entail, such as open mindedness and a logical mindset, will greatly contribute to the CHC community.

  2. Greetings! I’m Emily Chan, from Clackamas, a suburb just a few miles from Portland. I’m currently a pre-journalism major but I’m thinking of double majoring with either PPPM or political science. I’m very sociable, straightforward and enthusiastic about everything I do. I fell in love with journalism for the precise reason we’re required to read “The Round House”- because stories like these are far under-reported on, and going into journalism will help me bring others to the level of awareness of issues big AND small in all levels of our community. I hope being at CHC I’ll encourage others to put their entire self into everything they do, because life is much more fun when one adds zest to it!

  3. Hi! My name is Caroline Doyle, and I am from Corvallis, Oregon. I am a current biochemistry major with a pre-med focus, and I am hoping to additionally minor in Spanish. My career goals are to one day become a medical doctor and potentially work in Spanish speaking parts of the country and world. I am heavily involved with athletics, dance, and student government. Most importantly, I love meeting and getting to know new people! I look forward to rushing, attending football games, and joining many student interest groups this fall. I hope that in the CHC I can provide honesty and depth to discussions, be an approachable friend, and be an active member at events and socials. Sco Ducks! instagram: @_carolinedoyle

  4. Hi, my name is Hannah Murawsky and I’m from Las Vegas, Nevada. I am a music major but I also plan on declaring a biology major to help me with going to medical school. I play bassoon (why I’m a music major), and I love to sing. I’m extremely interested in science and I love to talk about interesting stories on NPR and other news stations. I’m super excited to meet everyone in CHC, and be surrounded by people as passionate as me! 🙂

  5. Hello! My name is Katie Jensen and I am from Los Angeles, California. I am currently undeclared, but I am leaning towards an English or music major. I’ve been playing clarinet for 10 years and will be in the marching band! I’m very excited and know I will love it. I look at every situation with an open mind and don’t like to jump to conclusions. I think I can contribute a unique perspective on problems because analyze everything, not one piece. I am also very empathetic so I can understand all sides of a story, which have helped me form rational decisions and help other people. I always give 110% and love new challenges so I hope the CHC will have plenty in store!

  6. Hello all! My name is Jacob Evarts and I am from a small, rural community in Northeastern Oregon (no, not near Bend, much farther). I am undeclared, but thinking about pursuing computer and information science with the hopes of eventually studying bioinformatics. Since I am from a small community that isn’t homogeneous in beliefs, I hope to share a perspective that many people may not get. I’m excited for the CHC and knew immediately it was the place for me!

  7. My name is Tysen Lang, and I’m from a small town in Southern Oregon called Central Point. I plan on double majoring in Biology and Spanish with the goal of one day attending dental school. I am excited to start classes in the CHC with the hope of meeting more academically motivated people with diverse backgrounds and interesting outlooks on the world. I love to read, listen to music, play basketball, and just about everything in-between. The perspective I bring to the CHC is that I don’t necessarily limit myself to having just one perspective. I plan on communicating with people on many different levels and gaining more unique perspectives as I begin my life in college.

  8. Hello Everyone! My name is John, and I am from Porter Ranch, CA, a little suburb outside of Los Angeles. My ultimate goal is to attend medical school, and I am double majoring in Biology and Human Physiology with an emphasis on Neuroscience. I am extremely excited to immerse myself in an academic and intellectual community, like the CHC, and surround myself with like-minded individuals. I am an Eagle Scout, play tennis, and study martial arts (Kenpo Karate). I feel that learning should be interdisciplinary, and I hope to contribute to the CHC by making connections and building bridges between seemingly unrelated subjects and disciplines in the hopes of fostering a more wholesome and enriched learning environment.

  9. Hi! My name is Whitney Warth and I am from Portland, OR. I am a biology major and my goal is to become an orthodontist. I am looking forward to discovering and immersing myself in all the university and CHC have to offer. From cheering at football games, to creating in the craft center, to volunteering, I hope to build on what I already love and learn more about myself along the way. While keeping an open mind, I hope to share my perspective that has been shaped by my life experiences such as my adoption from China as a baby, to my recent stay in Japan. I am so excited to meet and hear all the interesting perspectives I will soon be surrounded by! Thank you!

  10. Hi, my name is Conrad Sproul, and I am from Springfield, Oregon. My current plan is to double major in Political Science and Economics, in hopes of attending Law School after I graduate. My ultimate career goal is to work in government, whether it be an elected position or civil service, because I feel that our governments, local, state, and federal, often provide the least for those who need it most—illustrated powerfully in The Round House. I’m under no illusion that my perspective is unique or authoritative in any way, but I can’t wait to collaborate with my talented peers to live up to Honors College ideals of scholarship and service!

  11. Hi everyone! My name is Lauren Brown and I am from Tigard (near Portland), Oregon. I am majoring in Business Administration in hopes of combining my passions of working with people and numbers to benefit a greater good. From dance to student government, and from volunteering and attending sporting events, I look forward to getting involved in all that the CHC and UO community has to offer. Within the CHC I hope that I can contribute a logical & empathetic perspective, while making others feel empowered and valued.

  12. Hi! My name is Nora Kearns and I am from Lake Oswego, Oregon. I am majoring in Human Physiology, with the intent of pursuing a career in healthcare. I have always been passionate about health and science, and my hope is that I can spend my life helping and teaching others how to live a healthy lifestyle that will promote longevity and prevent disease. I am a determined, caring, optimistic, and open-minded person. I am always eager to hear the opinions and perspectives of others regarding social or political topics, such as those presented in The Round House, in order to better empathize with and understand every side. I am so excited to be surrounded by such motivated, talented, and passionate students and hope that I can contribute a positive and empathetic perspective to the CHC!

  13. Hello CHC! My name is Jake Dellinger, and I’m from Beaverton, Oregon. I am majoring in history and considering law school post-BA. I am also an only child, something my acquaintances often realize to their horror. However, I actually enjoy being the only child in the household, as it has forced me to adapt to the world of adults from an early age. Additionally, this aspect of my identity has allowed me to travel frequently, among the adult population of my household. Some of our adventures have blurred the line between vacation and exploration. I feel that I have greatly gained in perspective from this aspect of my childhood. I hope to share some of my experiences with the rest of the CHC community and hear fresh perspectives from the rest of you. For in this way, we all may grow.

  14. Greetings, my name is Samuel Pabst, I was born in Lompoc, California but I have lived in Eugene for the last 8 years. I am going into physics and education so that I can become a teacher in the future. I am a gay man and have Manic-Depressive Bi-polar and ADHD. I feel as though I have a somewhat unique perspective in that it has been a challenge just getting to where I am now. I hope to share my struggles and mistakes and learn from the stories of others.

  15. Hi Everybody! My name is Mackenzie and I’m entering as an Environmental Studies major. I enjoy spending my time outside playing sports, swimming, or taking extended hiking trips. I recently moved to Portland and the beautiful state of Oregon, however I have also called Colorado, Florida, and Tennessee my home. I graduated from high school in Nashville two years ago and decided to take time off to work, travel, and explore my passions a little bit before heading to college. I think my perspective after living in different parts of the U.S. growing up and traveling through various areas in the past two years has given me a unique way to view the world, as well as a different understanding of the word “home”. This will be something I can hopefully contribute to the CHC community in a positive way. I’m excited for the upcoming year and the opportunity to make connections with wonderful people in the CHC and UO community!

  16. Hello! I’m Karmen Clark, from Portland, OR. I’m currently majoring in Psychology with the goal of becoming a social worker or family counselor. I love exploring new interests and spent the majority of high school working in technical theater and teaching sex-ed through Planned Parenthood. I’m very driven and focused in the work that I do but I love to be curious and learn about new things everyday. As someone who attended an all-girls catholic high school, I hope to offer a female forward and socially aware viewpoint to discussions in the CHC. I’m looking forward to being back in the classroom after four months of summer and I can’t wait to meet you all!

  17. Hi! My name is Emily Ma. I am majoring in human biology and hope to minor in theater if I have space in my schedule :/ I love playing tennis, traveling, binge watching TV shows & movies, volunteering, hiking, and baking. I grew up raising thirteen chickens as my ultra fluffy bffs. This experience has changed the way I think of animals of all sizes, and I hope to create a little a farm within the CHC community for people to be able to interact with animals.

  18. Hey! My name is Maija Sands (Said like Maya just spelled different) and I’m from Portland, OR. I’m a human phys major on a pre med track and hope to attend medical school and become a neurologist after college. I played softball and volleyball all throughout high school. I was also involved in my student government as well as NHS. I am so excited for all the opportunities that UO and specifically CHC have to offer. I am Buddhist so I will bring a different perspective with a somewhat uncommon religion!

  19. Hi! My name is Audrey Landes and I’m from Southern California. Currently my major is undecided, but I’m planning on going into human physiology with a minor in Spanish. I’ve been involved in dance for about 13 years and in high school I ran on the xc and track team. I am really interested in different cultures and countries around the world. In the future I hope to be able to reach third world countries that are in need of aid and assist them in their health and well being. People’s opinions and perspectives are really important to me as they help me broaden my own ideas. I’m so excited to have the opportunity to be apart of the CHC.

  20. Hey Everyone!
My name is Kenzie Addington and I am from Jacksonville, OR. I am planning on either majoring in Political Science or Business Marketing, but I haven’t quite decided just yet. People would describe me as loyal, stubborn, and strong. I pride myself on my ability to stand up for what I believe in, but I am always open to hearing other people’s opinions if they are able to state them in a respectful manner. I love reading, playing volleyball, and jaMmInG to music! I am beyond pumped to start at UO and begin learning!

  21. Hi! My name is Brenna Barton and I am from Portland, Oregon. I am leaning towards an English or linguistics major with a minor in Spanish, however, I wish to further explore these fields before I make a decision. I played team sports such as basketball and volleyball all throughout high school (and plan to continue to play them recreationally at the university), so I believe I come to the CHC with the ability to compromise and work in a team. As a triplet, I also bring my ability to consider perspectives and needs outside my own when making decisions. I am excited to bring my ideas and thoughts to CHC/U of O this fall and to meet like-minded students who share my passion for learning.

  22. Hi! My name is McKenna Sjoden and I’m from the small town of Montrose, Colorado. I am undeclared at the moment, but will most likely major in business and pre-law. I love soccer, skiing, and was very involved in Student Council in high school. Most would describe me as outgoing, but also easy-going. I’m excited to meet all the new people at CHC this year!

  23. My name is Hannah Gerton and I’m from a suburb just outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota. As of now I plan on majoring in Architecture and possible adding a minor of some sort if I have spare time! In high school I was active in sports and also love to spend my free time doing crafts, drawing or painting. Coming to UO and the Honors College I hope to learn about others’ perspectives as well as share my own. My goal is the bring some “Minnesota Nice” to Oregon so I can be as welcoming and accommodating as possible while meeting all of you and learning in this community!
