Margaret Amanda Mann

Margaret is a name I have always been quite familiar with. Margaret is my middle name. It is also my mom’s middle name, my cousin Zoe’s middle name, and the middle name of my great aunt Janet. Every first born female has the name of Margaret attached to them in the Jacobs line.

The first Margaret, or at least the one we claim as our namesake, was Margaret Amanda Mann. She was born on November 10, 1879 in Ashtabula, Ohio. She married Ray Scoville in 1903 and together they ended up moving out of Ohio and to Pasadena, California. My grandpa only really knew her as Grandma Scoville but her name and memory live on. I refer to her as the closest thing to a celebrity in my family. By that I mean that she is “google”-able. She was the 1925 Pasadena Rose Queen for the Pasadena Rose Parade. She won that award at a time where beauty was not a winning quality but rather community service and leadership.
