Poetry has always been one of my favorite art forms, it was the only way I could express my feelings when I was younger and I hope to turn it into a career one day. This poem was inspired by a line from the movie Don’t Look Up, obviously, that film has had a big influence on me throughout this course. I made the title of the poem that direct line from the movie, the line “And you can act like everything is alright” is from the song Riley Bina sings towards the end of the movie. Her entire song is so fantastic and really sets our intention when you look at the lyrics. I wanted my poem to reflect the idea that the damage has already been done, it’s been done for a while and we still are allowing ourselves to pretend everything is alright because it’s “easier”. The poem also references the erasure of stories like Skywoman, and how her story of having a relationship with the earth has been discarded and replaced by ideals presented in the bible. We have allowed this erasure to take over and cloud our judgment and we have become complacent with the narrative that’s been shoved in our faces. This was a great project to get some of my frustration out, I hope you enjoy reading it.
