Final Reflection

The readings have helped me realize some of the relationships between me and nature that I never really thought about before reading them, such as how I don’t refer to nature as though it is alive and living. I just refer to it as something that is there. Like, if I see a rabbit I don’t refer to the creature as he or she, I refer to it as, it. I always cared about nature but this class made me realize some things I never really thought about when it came to nature. This course also brought to my attention that you never really see books about stuff like global warming and the climate crisis. Then again this makes sense because people don’t wanna see a book about why they should change how they live, even if it is important. When it comes to nature in society, this class helped me realize how much work we are gonna have to do with society if we want it to improve it. Society has some attitudes toward nature that are not beneficial for either party. This is because society only uses nature to make money and doesn’t allow it to heal. Civilization sees nature as just a commodity, but we should see it as something more than that. Society also sees the land we live on as private property, rather than a piece of the Earth. The most influential sources for me in this course were the Anthropocene documentary and Braiding Sweetgrass. The Anthropocene was influential because it really showed the devastation that humans were doing to the Earth and the horrible things that we will leave behind, such as techno fossils. One scene from that documentary that really stood out to me was the massive excavating tool in Germany that was ripping up the ground and destroying all of that fertile soil on top. Braiding Sweetgrass was powerful in another way. It was powerful through its writing. The author did an amazing job drawing me into the stories and saying her opinion on the issues with humanity and how it treats nature. Every chapter of that book brought me in and drew my full attention. For topics in the course, I think ecofeminism and the climate crisis are two topics we as a species should be looking further into. The climate crisis is a given because it is one of the biggest hurdles that humanity right now as a species has to face. Ecofeminism is important because it can help build a bond with nature that will help us treat nature better in the future, which will be for the betterment of society. This leads me to the next question in which I have to say yes, art and literature will play an important role in finding a path for humanity that helps us deal with the climate crisis successfully. These two things will help us understand the bond between nature and humanity. Finally, the most important questions to ask are, “Am I doing the right thing for the climate crisis?” And, “What can I do to help improve society in some way to help prevent the climate crisis?”
