GE Questions and Answers

Where can I apply for an open GE position?

All open Graduate Employee positions are posted on the COE Handshake webpage. To view our available Graduate Employment open postings, visit the University of Oregon, College of Education Handshake page.

Can I apply for both GE positions and scholarships?

Yes. It is possible to get scholarships or additional stipends on top of your GE appointment. There are two key limitations: 1) some scholarships stipulate that they cannot be combined with a GE appointment, so you’ll have to check with the requirements of each scholarship you wish to apply for; and 2) COE policy states that “The maximum stipend-GE combination cannot exceed $3,000 per month for doctoral students or $2,000 per month for master’s students.” There might be tax implications for receiving both a scholarship and a GE position.

What is the timeline for the application and hiring process?

Academic departments make every effort to identify and post announcements in mid-February and early March for GE positions open for the next academic year. Timelines for the application and hiring process for GE positions in COE academic departments are listed below:

  • In February and March the majority of open GE positions for the following academic year will be posted
  • Initial review begins 10 business days from posting date
  • Offers are made for most positions by early April, although timing of offers vary by department and posting date
  • April 15th: Students accept or decline offers by this date (in general, some offers may be issued after this date)

GE positions in research units are posted and filled throughout the year, as funding becomes available through grants or other sources. All position announcements are posted for 10 business days before initial review of applications begins.

What do I need to submit to apply for a GE position?

The following materials are used to assess each applicant on the basis of the below-listed criteria:Statement of Qualifications/Cover Letter

  • CV or Resume
  • Professional references (include in application 3 professional references and their contact information)
  • Additional materials may be required such as transcripts or letters of recommendation; each individual job announcement will list if additional application materials are required

Is there a deadline for applications?

Open GE positions are posted on Handshake for a minimum of 10 business days before the committee’s review. Most search committees will begin their application review immediately after the 2-week period. In order to be assured consideration it is recommended that students apply within the first 10 business days of a position being posted. GE selection processes are quite competitive as these positions are in high demand. Once a position is filled it is removed from the COE GE job site.

How do I know if a position has been filled?

Applicants are notified of the selection committee’s decisions within five working days after decisions are made. Most GE positions for the coming year are assigned by the end of Spring term. However, applications remain on file for the entire year and assignments may be made later, depending on need.
