We believe it is important for students to understand the value of their personal information. We have created a series of 10 lessons designed for 3rd grade students in Washington state, aimed at teaching them how to protect their information online. Aligned with Washington state standards 1b-cs-02, 1b-ap-10, and 1b-ni-05, each 30-minute lesson will be interactive, engaging, and age-appropriate, using Scratch Jr. as the primary software tool for learning. Scratch Jr. is a coding language designed specifically for young learners, making it the perfect tool for teaching students how to create programs with loops and conditionals. We will also be incorporating art as an additional subject, helping students to explore their creativity while learning about technology. The addition of art to our project can make it more interactive with students and make our lessons more accessible for students and districts with limited access to technology.
Our lessons will cover a wide range of topics, including what a computer is, how to create a program, and how to protect yourself online. We will teach students how to protect their personal information online, from creating strong passwords to avoiding phishing scams. By the end of our series of lessons, students will not only have a greater understanding of online safety but also be equipped with the tools they need to protect themselves and others online. Students should also have a baseline knowledge of computers and their functions. As technology continues to play a vital role in our lives, we believe it’s essential to educate our children on how to navigate the digital world safely. We look forward to bringing our lessons to Washington state classrooms and helping to empower the next generation of digital citizens.
