I graduated with an MA Classics in 1997. My thesis “The Wit of Sextus Propertius” was advised by P. Lowell Bowditch.
I began the MA program with the simple goal of learning more about Latin and Greek; I was soon drawn into the world of classical scholarship. My professors were all actively engaged in their respective fields and they shared their research. I loved the small classes on that beautiful campus where I could meet individually with my professors. Certainly, the MA Classics program prepared me well for doctoral studies, but most importantly, it was a place where I grew confident about pursuing my own interests no matter where they led me, whether academia or art or simple enjoyment of intellectual exploration.
After graduation, I stayed in Eugene for a couple of years enjoying work with friends at the Kiva grocery store and starting some artistic projects. When I learned of a job opportunity near my family, I moved to Connecticut and became a licensed teacher in French and Latin through an ‘Alternate Route to Certification’ program. In 2001, I attended the American Academy in Rome Classical Summer School where I became convinced that I could to continue on to the Ph.D. From 2003-2007, I taught full time and attended classes at the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan. After earning my Ph.D. with a thesis on Hellenistic epigrams, I presented a paper at a conference, applied to some academic positions, and wrote a review of a Homer translation, but I always knew that I would return to secondary school teaching. After more than twenty years in public schools, I am now teaching French, Latin and Greek at Saint Thomas Academy, a private school near St. Paul, Minnesota. While teaching is a demanding job, I have a schedule that allows me to run a print studio and make art. This year I completed Reading Thucydides, a book of screen prints and commentary about reading ancient Greek. My first solo exhibition was right next to my studio, North Star Printmakers Studio in Minneapolis. I will be giving a book talk at the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan on April 22, 2025 and hope to visit Eugene soon to share my work.
