Install these Workflow Tools

Install Workflow Tools

Always go to the app’s web site to download software. Avoid all 3rd-party websites. Many 3rd-party downloads carry malware.

Windows Users: You will need Windows 7 or higher in 111.

MacOS Users: You will need OS X 10.8 or higher in 111.

What to Install

These are the workflow tools to install on your computer so that you can use your own computer in lab, and do your 111 projects at home or on the road:

  1. Install Chrome.
Chrome is a cross-platform web browser with built-in WebDev Tools.
Memorize the keyboard command to open Chrome DevTools:
    MacOS: option-command-j. Windows: control-shift-j, or F12.
  2. Install the Atom Code Editor.
  3. Install these Eight Atom Packages.
  4. Windows: Install puTTY and winSCP. puTTY is a terminal app, and winSCP is a file transfer app.
  5. Mac: Install Fugu. Fugu is a file transfer app.
  6. Optional: install the VS Code Editor. I will use both Atom and VS Code in class.
  7. Optional: Packages are called extensions in VS Code. If you also install VS Code, learn how to install extensions, and then install ESLint, HTMLHint, Open In Browser, and Prettier.

Why Not Sublime Text?

  1. Sublime Text is not free and open source (but the trial version can be used indefinitely for “Winrar free”.
  2. Sublime Text’s package manager is nearly impossible to use for beginners.
  3. You are welcome to use Sublime Text if you install these Sublime Text packages.

Why Not CyberDuck?

Although the CyberDuck file transfer app is free, open source, and cross-platform, we are not using CyberDuck because you have to open a second window on your desktop to transfer files. Fugu & WinSCP have both windows built-in.

Fugu and WinSCP win on this point.
