Learn to Code HTML and CSS

If you did not previously take CIS 110 at the U of O, you must complete an online tutorial that covers HTML and CSS. If you do not have time to complete a tutorial, you will not be prepared to succeed in 111.

General Assembly’s Dash is a fun and free online course that teaches you the basics of web development through projects you can do in your browser.

Learn Basic HTML & CSS in Three Steps

Complete each step in order:

  1. Watch Learn HTML in 12 Minutesand  Learn CSS in 12 Minutes (youtube).

  2. Sign up for a free account at Dash

  3. Complete Dash PROJECT 1: BUILD A PERSONAL WEBSITE.

Note: if the Dash editor does not function correctly in Chrome, it will work correctly in the Opera and Edge browsers.

When you have completed your personal website, Dash hosts your website on their servers, and creates a URL for your website:

  4. Send your instructor the URL for your completed project (email michaelh@uoregon.edu).

Use “My Dash Project” for the subject line of the email, and include the URL for your completed project hosted on Dash (see step 3, above) in the message body.

Here’s an example of a personal website completed at Dash.

  5. Watch Learn How the Internet Works in 5 Minutes (YouTube).
