MasterclassOn November 25, 2022, Associate Professor Dong Hoon Kim taught a masterclass at the University Institution of Spanish Cinema of the University Carlos III of Madrid, Spain. Professor Kim was invited to deliver a lecture on North Korean cinema as a part of “Reflexiones sobre la cultura asiática” (“Reflections on Asian Culture”), a special film studies course funded by Eurasian Foundation from Asia.

Michael AronsonCinema Studies Associate Professor Michael Aronson received a Thomas F. Herman Award for Specialized Pedagogy, which recognizes expertise in a specific area of teaching. Aronson is one of seven faculty members to receive a 2022 Distinguished Teaching Award.

Erin Hanna, associate professor of cinema studies at the University of Oregon, was interviewed for See You At San Diego: An Oral History of Comic-Con, Fandom, and the Triumph of Geek Culture, which came out on September 6th. See You At San Diego is a comprehensive chronicle of Comic-Con International and modern geekdom itself as told through countless intimate, hilarious, and often-thought provoking stories by nearly fifty of the most integral members of today’s convention and fandom community.

Hanna’s research explores the intersection of media industries and fans, with a particular emphasis on in-person media events, film and television promotion, and historical fan communities.

Quinn ConnellConnell’s video will be part of the global broadcast of World Athletics Championships events!

UO Alumni Feature Film World Premiere at Merced Queer Film Festival

the last day of retrogradeUniversity of Oregon Cinema Studies alumni Brad Burke (2015), Claire Haines (2015), Bronwyn Thomas (2020), and Minjoo Jang (2021) have a feature film getting its World Premiere at the Merced Queer Film Festival in Merced, California on May 21st. Their film,The Last Day of Retrograde, is nominated for 6 awards at the event, including Best Feature, Best Comedy Feature, Best Director, Best Female Identifying Performer (two nominations), and Best Male Identifying Performer. The film has already won Best Queer Feature at the Bright International Film Festival during a private screening with festival judges.
