Reflections on Learning Goals

  • To gain an understanding of how to successfully structure and implement a marketing plan for an arts organization
    • I think that the Marketing Plan for Portland Playhouse was key in the implementation of this learning goal because it helped me to think about implementing a marketing strategy, the timeline required, the staffing required, and the desired outcomes.
  • Understand how to target specific audiences in a marketing strategy
    • I think that I have a bit more of an understanding of this and implementation methods for it. I also feel that, for me, I will gain a much better understanding of it once I have an in-depth knowledge of an organization and its constituents, because this varies from organization to organization.
  • To learn about the combination of graphic design and marketing
    • I think that the use of infographics is useful for conveying information.

AAD 550 Learning Goals Reflection

  • To better understand the nature of the arts in a transmedia environment
  • To express the function and role of art in a contemporary society
  • To gain an understanding of how art functions in different cultures
  • To analyze the role of an aesthetic theory in the contemporary art world
  • To be able to connect the arts with current societal trends
  • To understand the role of transmedia in the current artistic landscape
  • To use transmedia and aesthetics to further develop artistic participation

Based on my learning goals for this class, I think that I began to gain an understanding of what a transmedia environment is. This however, is still something that I am learning about and will continue to learn and explore through my artistic and educational development. Specifically, my last learning goal which was to “use transmedia and aesthetics to fourth develop artistic participation.” I learnt more about the function of art in contemporary society, specifically, as a vehicle for social change. I was able to analyze different artistic aesthetics and cultural aesthetics and to connect the arts with societal trends. Lastly, I explored the question of arts participation, however I think that this is something that I will always be exploring and learning about as my artistic and educational journey develop.

Learning Goals Reflection

Looking back on my initial reflections for the course which were as follows:

  • To become more familiar with design software.
  • To better understand marketing in an organizational context.
    • To better understand arts marketing strategies and how to apply concepts learnt towards these strategies.
  • To be able to gain an understanding of typography and to be able to use it effectively in design.
  • Gain insight into branding and how it affects the consumer’s perspective

I feel like through this course I definitely became more familiar with design software. I learnt how to use Adobe Illustrator and Indesign, which were two programs that I had never used before. I would, however, like to learn how to do more original art in Illustrator. For arts marketing strategies, I feel like this will be covered more next term in the second half of the course, however, I was able to learn about trends in arts participation through the case study. Typography was also a major part of the class and not only did I learn a lot about font and the different types of fonts, but I also learnt a whole range of design vocabulary and learnt how to start thinking about those elements in design. Branding was also a big part of the course, especially with the rebranding assignment. I found it interesting to learn how different colours create different reactions in people and connotations to a certain brand. In addition to these learning goals, I think that just being able to go through the process of creating a logo and collateral and then having to think about all the different elements that factor into the design (such as printing) and putting the design into a set of graphic standards was a very useful assignment and something that will be useful in the future.
