Percy Julian Scholarship
The Percy Julian Scholarship was established in 2020 for undergraduates studying Chemistry or Biochemistry at the University of Oregon. The scholarship is intended to support students of diverse backgrounds in their pursuit of a career in Chemistry.
The grandchild of slaves, Percy Lavon Julian was born in 1899 in segregated Montgomery, Alabama. Julian overcame the racism and racial persecution of these times, graduating from DePauw University after not being allowed to live on campus due to the color of his skin. He later received a doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Vienna, as it was practically impossible for an African-American to receive a doctorate in The United States at that time.
After receiving his doctorate, Julian went on to become a pioneer in the synthesis of many hormones and steroids while laying the groundwork for both cortisone and birth control. By his death in 1975, Julian had received over 130 chemical patents. He was the second black person to be inducted into the National Academy of Sciences.
The Percy Julian Scholarship will be awarded by the UO Chemistry and Biochemistry department each year to support the scientific
aspirations of our undergraduate majors and to advance our commitment to an inclusive diverse student population. Preference will be given for students with financial need as determined by the UO Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. The award amount for the 2020-2021 academic year is $2000.
