Expected behavior
- Treat everyone with respect, valuing a diversity of views and opinions.
- Be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants
- Use discretion to ensure that your words and actions communicate respect for others. This is especially important for those in positions of authority since individuals with lower rank or status may be reluctant to express their objections or discomfort regarding unwelcome behavior.
Unacceptable behavior
- Physical or verbal abuse of any kind
- Unwanted sexual advances, jokes, comments, or unnecessary touching
- Slurs or unwelcome jokes as well as verbal, graphic, or physical conduct relating to an individualās race, color, religious creed, sex, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, age, gender or sexual orientation
- Verbal comments or electronic communication that reinforces social structures of domination (such as related to gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance/size, race, age, religion)
- Deliberate intimidation, stalking, and aggressive verbal confrontations
Participants who engage in behavior which contravenes this code may be asked to leave an event and may have restrictions placed on future activities.
Reporting unacceptable behavior
- If you experience a problem, feel a lack of safety, or perceive harassment towards yourself or another participant at a Departmental event, any faculty member can be contacted for confidential discussion. The event you attend may have other staff and graduate student representatives who are ready to speak with you confidentially regarding your concerns.
- Some faculty may be ‘designated reporters’, which means that they are required to file reports of discrimination or harassment. Faculty who are not designated reporters will ask if you wish to make an official report and be guided by your wishes. See here for more details.
