With a population of over 34 million people, Uzbekistan is the most populated country in the region of Central Asia. The Uzbeks are predominantly Sunni Muslims, with a range of mosques and Madrassahs presented throughout the country. Although Uzbekistan has a low GDP, silk and cotton trades have created some wealth in the region. Uzbekistan is currently an authoritarian state with a strict executive branch of government that controls media, differing political parties, and reforms. Within the country, the region of Karakalpakstan is currently facing protests as a result of the governments proposed amendment that revokes the region’s ability secede to a province of the country. They’re also currently struggling with cases homophobia, child labor, women’s rights, and criminal justice.
