The loss of biodiversity in Kazakhstan can usually be attributed to the development of a prosperous oil and natural gas industry in the 20th and 21st centuries. However, there are more issues than just this for the natural environment of Kazakhstan; in recent years, problems with waste storage and runoff from other industrial products have led to the destruction of vital ecosystems. Many of these ecosystems are home to endangered species of flora and fauna that require these habitats to continue surviving. However, despite concerns about industrialization, many of these animals are at risk from overhunting in their indigenous regions of Kazakhstan despite their protection as endangered species. All of these threats contribute to the decline of environmental health and biodiversity in the area of Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
