Turkmenistan and the Enviornment

Turkmenistan is a country located in central Asia, and is a habitat that is hard for anything to live and grow in. This is especially the case due to desertification in Turkmenistan. One such factor that contributes to this problem is overgrazing by livestock. Because there are too many animals, there is not enough land and food for them to properly graze and grow. This then results in desertification and soil erosion.

It also doesn’t help that in Turkmenistan there are the ‘gates to hell’ which is a large burning natural gas crater that has been burning for many years releasing natural gas into the atmosphere. Going off on this there is also chemical pollution through the excessive use of fertilizer on cotton and other crops.  Thus, resulting in hardly there being drinking water and thereby resulting in increasing rates of infant mortality, hepatitis and illnesses because of it getting into the groundwater. There is also the fact of the inefficient irrigation techniques on the Amu Darya which is contributing to the drying of the Aral Sea.

To combat this the country has been cooperating with the European Union to reduce and manage the impact of the environmental problems that they are dealing with.
