When choosing a lab, there are many factors to consider. You might be thinking of some of the following questions:

• Do I want to go to industry, a national lab, a postdoc, or academia?
• Is there enough funding in the lab and for the entire duration of my PhD?
• Do I need to teach every term in this lab?
• Is the lab the best fit for me?
• Do I like the PI’s mentoring style?
• How long do I want to be working on my PhD?
• How is the publication record in the lab that I want to join?

These might be some questions you are asking yourself while choosing a lab. One of the best things that you can do is to have these honest conversations with the PI and graduate students in the lab that you are considering.
