Websites at the UO

By Daniel Mundra

Any UO Faculty/Staff/Student can install WordPress in their space. For people who are new to the University you need to first get the UO computing folks to allow you to SSH into your space, you can do that by going to help desk. After that follow this guide written by my friend to install and setup wordpress.  The script was written pre WordPress 3 so you need this fix. This script will work even though the UO web space moved from www.uoregon.edu/~duckid to pages.uoregon.edu/duckid.

I think the script above is better suited for people who have installed wordpress before and have some programming background. For those of you who have no coding experience and would like a blog on campus I would recommend them use Ufolio.

For departments who need simple websites they can use this solution provided by IS.

    Daniel, et al.:

You should be aware that the current installation of UfoliO is a pilot that is slated to go away at the end of this academic year. We have a user group working on requirements and a request for a successor service, but nothing is certain at this time.

Another consideration is that the current UfoliO installation uses an older version of WordPress (2.8.4a), so it doesn’t support 3.0+ release features, latest plug-ins, etc.

Bottom line, if you request an account on UfoliO, there is a chance you will need to migrate your site to another platform fairly soon. Running WordPress on shell is one alternative for people with the chops, but be sure to keep it patched!

If you have any questions about this, don’t hesitate to contact me or any other member of the UfoliO user group. All the best,

  2. A new WordPress service is now offered centrally at the UO. It is called UO Blogs http://blogs.uoregon.edu/. I recommend anyone who is interested in WordPress to go check it out. Anyone at the UO can setup as many WordPress sites as they want.
