Designing Better Maps, 2nd Edition

Summary

As part of my research assistantship with Cindy Brewer, I was involved in the project to update and publish the second edition of her widely used cartographic design book in collaboration with Esri Press. Four other fellow research assistants were involved in the project: Elaine Guidero, Aaron Dennis and Paulo Raposo. I was primarily in charge of the creating maps, figures and graphics for the chapter on basemap design, in addition to updating census data-derived maps andĀ figures that are scattered throughout the book. Additionally, I was the primary cartographic reviewer and editor during the pre-finalization revision process. Thus, I played essential roles both during both the production and revision stages of the project and was involved in the production and edit of approximately 190 maps in figures throughout the book.

The book can be purchased from Amazon at this link.

Bellow is a selection of those maps and figures.

This map was a reproduction of the AIAN demographic map from the well-known 2000 census map series using 2010 census data. Although the aim was to match the original look of the census map series, this map was reproduced completely from scratch completely within ArcMap with all new data.
