Five Learning Objectives

1. Develop a broader understanding of transmedia storytelling and its effects on participatory practices in the arts.

I believe that this course has allowed be to accomplish this learning objective because I now understand the complexity and importance of transmedia, not only having to do with storytelling, but actually being a participatory art itself. It’s importance is crucial in today’s age with the ever developing world of technology and it allows for more connections as well as more insight into the world of participatory practices in the arts.
2. Identify a weakness in and propose a solution for the transition of the arts world into becoming more inclusive entity.

One of the weaknesses in the process of the arts world becoming more inclusive, is the stigma that comes along with being a part of the arts world. For so long the culture of art was seen as out of reach to so many different parts of society, that now that it has been trying to open it’s doors, difficulties have arisen.  I do not believe that I could propose a solution that has already been tried thus far, but I can name one that I have found interesting. This ties into the first learning objective and the idea of participatory art. Many organizations are now trying to involve the public in larger scale art projects and in turn redefining what the words “art” and “artist” mean. By including the general public they are taking one step forward in this process.
3. Research the responses of the public to the transition into an inclusive art world.

I believe that I was able to accomplish this objective through the work that I did in my field guide. For example, I examined controversy in relation to public art and historical monuments. People participate in art whether they are aware of it or not in the ways they critique, observe, reflect and in the case of my field guide, sometime vandalize. The public wants a hand in what types of art define their communities.
4. Gain a greater understanding of the folkloric role in society and its effects.

I did not get to look into this objective as much as I would have liked to but I did learn a small amount from my peers during their Module presentations. For instance, one person talked a lot about festivals and handmade crafts. The point of the presentation wasn’t to talk about how cool or unique these things are, but about preserving culture and tradition and the importance of these things in society.
5. Learn how cultural and social change come about from the role of art in society in relation to public or community art.

Throughout the term I found that in many ways, art can often be the root of cultural and social change. During my module 4 presentation I talked about the role of public art and what it might be like in the future, but also gave an example of what it is like now. Art gives a message, and from my research and the artist that I examined I found the idea that art does not change the world. It does change the way you see the world though, and that can evoke change if we are willing to do something about it. Art is a way to express ourselves, our emotions and that ability to do those things can be extremely powerful.
