Art, Games, and Tech Discussion

It is so interesting to watch the lecture that Jane McGonigal gave about how gamers can save the real world in the future. I totally agree with her when she analyzed the reasons that could make epic wins possible in online worlds. McGonigal said people feel they are being trusted, they enjoy the sense of accomplishment when they achieve the mission, and they are keen on positive feedbacks every time they achieve next level. However, in my opinion, I think the main difference between online games and the real world is that the failure in game world doesn’t really matter while it does in real life. People are fearless when they play online games and they are not afraid of making wrong decisions, and if they can do the same thing in real life, which is impossible, their potential could be inspired. But how could we make it possible in the real world that people are less scared of failure? Is that possible that we always give people second or even multiple chances?

REFLECTION

This assignment was a very interesting one to me because I feel like technology is closer to my daily life. First of all, I was impressed by the history of computer graphics. I take computer improvement for granted and never thought about the history of it before. Jones talks a lot about the history of computer graphics in her article. “In the 1940s analogue computers were used to generate the earliest computer graphics and display them on oscilloscopes.” (Jones, 51). This was the first phase of the development of computer graphics. The more interesting part is the changing from two-dimensional screen to three-dimensional because we experienced and saw this! Everything is changing to 3D now, and the improvement of technology definitely brought huge joyful experience to people.

In Jane McGonigal’s presentation Gaming Can Make a Better World on TED, she said that playing online and video games could help solving real world problems (TED2010, February 2010). I think this is another very interesting point and I was curious how in the first place. She made many valuable points and shown a lot of data to illustrate her points. In her opinion, technology is a force to make culture better. However, like I said in my discussion post Art, Games, and Tech Discussion, the main difference between online games and the real world, which makes harder to set equally of online and real world problem, is that the failure in game world doesn’t really matter while it does in real life.

I chose this picture demonstrate the connection between art and tech. Examine the role of technology as force for cultural maintanence and change was another goal I achieved by researched this unit. It is becoming much easier to post things online and share with others. The technology and the Internet are bring connections between people and the world as a whole. And they make our work and life joyful and easier, thus it seems that everyone could be an artist if they want. However, this makes me worry about the human rights in the future since I learned unit nine. Copyright is a huge problem that we are facing right now in terms of online world. I discussed this more deeply in my post Remix Discussion.

FUTURE

Personally, I play some video games when I am free, but like I said, I took the great 3D visual effect for granted. After learning this unit, I believe I will pay more attention to the technique part and be thankful to both computer scientists and art designers. By knowing the history of technology improvement would also make my game experience more interesting, and I will also try to use my skills in games to solve real world problems.
