Remix Discussion

The overall TED talk “Laws that Choke Creativity” was fairly interesting. Lawrence Lessig talked mainly about three stories. However, I was drawn away by the last story when he started showing the second remix video where Jesus was dancing on the street with barely any cloth on. Jesus was lip singing to a very famous song. He focused on a very important issue in today’s society which is copyright. Most of us have access to the internet and it had become very easy and common to use other people’s work and re-make it into their own work. It touches on a serious problem of copyright. As he mentioned in the video, the important part is not about technique, but about the idea or the way people using the source. New generation and young kids have their own way to see the world, and the old law of copyright would limit new ideas. But I personally think that remix is just something funny, and it does not show a lot of creativities. The law of copyright has its own value of protecting people’s work, so I think remix shouldn’t affect the power of copyright.

  1. Hi,Bean! I enjoy reading your discussion about the idea of remix. I also agree that advanced technology may reduce people’s ability of being creative and I think your worries about copyright and young generation is very important for us to think about. According to the presentation, the presenter said “we cannot make our kids passive again, and we can only make them, quote, “pirates” (Lessig, TED). However, I do not agree your ideas about remix, where you think that ” remix is just something funny and it does not show a lot of creativities.” I think that by remixing, we are enhancing our knowledge and creativity. In addition, reworking can enhance the original works in ways that the producer did not think of when producing it. I think remix is a better way for us to be more creative since we can be motived by multiple ways or methods.

  2. Bean, your post about your thoughts on remixes made a lot of sense in relation to copyrighting. Unfortunately, I would have to disagree when you say that “remix shouldn’t affect the power of copyright” because there are many artists of things that are copyrighted and they work so hard to make it so they get to the acknowledgement of their works. From remixing, I think that it is just stealing someone else’s creativity and making it into something else. Yes, like you said, it can be funny to watch sometimes, but it is also stealing another person’s creativity that came to mind. But I do agree when you say that remixing does not give off a lot of creativity because it is taking an idea from someone else and making it into something different that is also closely related.

  3. Yes I love that short remix video too. It’s just so funny. I wouldn’t agree with your idea that copyright law will do anything good on protecting people’s work. In Ancient world where there are no copyright law, we were never lack of artists or poets with creativity. They tend to achieve themselves by letting more people read their works and recognize their values, rather than making money. I believe when a writer start composing for the purpose of making fortunes, he/she cannot create any piece of work that reflect his/her value, instead, he would try something that easily attract people’s attentions. Besides, for the modern tech cooperations like Microsoft, if they desire to make money by selling their operating system, I have to say that their business model has completely out of date.
