Analysis
Coordinate with Tigard Next Steps pp 13-16 and 06 Air Quality Readings :
Research question/s
– Consider window opening procedures near vehicle areas at times of high PM
– primary schools in Barcelona found that children in schools with high pollution had lower annual growth in cognitive development (7.4%) compared to those in schools with less pollution (11.5%).
– How can we inform the whole population of a city or a country to join the combat against air pollution, when there are thousands of different behaviors and types of people? In a way that the majority of the population would be inclined to make a difference in their daily life.
– Different methods of communication and publication of the information could reach most if not all of the demographics in a population.
Plan project for measuring Pm and other information is measured, season / point-in-time, location, comparison baseline areas, pilot study:
– Air pollution from vehicles in dense urban settings
– Student drop-off, student pick-up
– Schools in urban context
– Schools in Gracia
– How air pollution effects growth of human cells or plants
– Sensors measuring motion and time
– Placing sensors on street signs which inform the public of which thermally comfortable streets are available
What input sensors other than Purple Air (they use PMS7003) are possible?
– Motion sensors and DHT22
What study plan is possible?
– Researching related topics of previous studies and possible changes made due to information spreading / effectiveness.
Design Sensors for Architecture and Urbanism
SITUATED TECHNOLOGY IN THE URBANISM AND ARCHITECTURE AT SPACE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 7 years old
Where and how many PM sensors could be located in the future project?
– At least 8. At ground level on each corner of facade, as well as in courtyard, in different heights of facade.
OUTPUT
Where could that information be displayed and to whom?
– Displays within the public realm of the street, in different languages and different ways of saying the same sentence to reach to all demographics, as well as for the teachers and students in the class.
What expected behavioral change is possible?
– People will find new paths of travel away from school, or use different modes of travel closer to school.
What responsive technology could activate and to what purpose?
– Light, sound, or water could indicate high levels of PM, to show how levels change throughout the day and possibly throughout the year if behavioral changes are effective.
How is it communicated abstractly and comparative / absolute values (ex. color, light, time, etc), who uses the information and how do they make behavioral changes and or responsive technology changes.
– communicated through changes of visual indicators of PM, possibly to show what is effective and what is not in a short term vs. long term scenario.
Next Steps
– Purple Air at La Chalmeta coop housing (2+ sensors)
Setup for collection immediately after Easter break. How can these sensors low and how and possibly others in other housing around Marina be used:
– Within streetscape of public realm and cartel courtyard
