Research question/s

And how do we consider current trends of urban
ecological design that inter-relate new mobility models between vehicles, bikes and pedestrians,
ecological ideas of water, light, air, vegetation and animals, and technological means of new
data collection and analysis?

A response from another reading was to increase the vegetation barrier between the busy roads and school grounds by planting ivy on the walls streetside and increasing the height and width of the walls through density of vegetation

How can we best protect children’s health through preemptive measures that can provide foresight into dangerous levels of air quality?

Poor air quality is often a product of a too rapid expansion of urban infrastructure and populous growth that needs to be better planned and thought out beforehand, ultimately usually ending up being worse in underprivileged neighborhoods.

Plan project for measuring Pm and other information is measured, season / point-in-time, location, comparison baseline areas, pilot study:

Higher proximity to the intersection will lead to higher exposure of PM.

8amcommuting hours and 5pm

Placa del Sol

Gracia School Placa du Nord

Measuring particulate through sensor data and monitoring of children’s health

4 sensors measuring PM two at intersection and two in school courtyard

Taking an intersection at Marina del Prat Vermell and comparing it to the closest schoolgrounds

What input sensors other than Purple Air (they use PMS7003) are possible?

custom SA+UD kits

What study plan is possible?

Placing sensors at various locations and taking the data to compare time-based PM levels to children’s health

Design Sensors for Architecture and Urbanism

SITUATED TECHNOLOGY IN THE URBANISM AND ARCHITECTURE AT SPACE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 7 years old

Where and how many PM sensors could be located in the future project?

There could be four PM sensors on the road, one in the intersection and one on the road in front of the school. The other two could be at the building entrance and inside the courtyard of the school.

OUTPUT

Where could that information be displayed and to whom?

The information could be displayed at the school entrance to parents right at the drop-off zone.

What expected behavioral change is possible?

Parents will hesitate for shorter periods with their engine on and become concerned about how the air quality is affecting their children seeing it real time.

What responsive technology could activate and to what purpose?

The sensor could activate a graph displaying the levels on an LCD screen in order to reflect the current and lingering PM emissions.

How is it communicated abstractly and comparative / absolute values (ex. color, light, time, etc), who uses the information and how do they make behavioral changes and or responsive technology changes.

The light of the graph could go from green=safe to red=dangerous which are universal indicators of good and bad, thereby making a clear display to parents of their high emissions and need to keep their children further away from high emission zones.

Next Steps
– Purple Air at La Chalmeta coop housing (2+ sensors)
Setup for collection immediately after Easter break. How can these sensors low and how and possibly others in other housing around Marina be used:

The sensors could be used to tell if the nearby construction or busy road by the car dealerships is creating high PM or there are other more immediate threats to air quality near the schools.
