Coordinate with Tigard Next Steps pp 13-16 and 06 Air Quality Readings :
Research question/s

– Study: Green walls to filter and block PM along the school grounds at Lincoln
Place and the surface and structured parking at Lincoln Center Towers.

– From Barcelona Recommendations reading: Schools with a courtyard that faces a busy street would be particularly good candidates for a green wall of ivy covering the courtyard fence and a row of evergreen trees. Schools with a classroom building that faces a busy street could have a green wall of ivy on the facade of the building. A thick shrub barrier between the busy street and the sidewalk, in addition to reducing air pollution, would be suitable for reducing traffic noise.
The effectiveness of green walls will be greater the higher and the greater the perimeter of the yard they can cover. Ensuring good maintenance of the plants in the long term is key to maintaining filtration capacity

– How could green walls/planted areas be leveraged in our housing project to reduce air pollution’s impact on families residing in Marina del Prat Vermell? Could we use edible plants to filter air while also helping to maintain the food system?

– Air quality greatly impacts human health, and urban areas typically have high concentrations of pollutants that can be harmful. Urbanists have a responsibility to design solutions that improve air quality and protect the health of city residents. 

Plan project for measuring Pm and other information is measured, season / point-in-time, location, comparison baseline areas, pilot study:

– Air quality could be a major problem for people who live along Carrer de Cal Ciso in Marina del Prat Vermell, specifically when it comes to particulate matter from the large residential construction that’s in progress.

– Point in time 1= mid-morning when construction is at its peak, Point in time 2= evening when construction is done for the day and residents have windows open for cross-ventilation

– Student location: The red apartment building or La Chalmeta on Carrer de Cal Ciso

– Baseline location: housing in another neighborhood like Poblenou or Gracia 

– Student Lab Study: How does construction affect air quality for those living in social housing on Carrer de Cal Ciso in Marina del Prat Vermell?

– Student Pilot: I looked at various indicators related to the food system in Marina del Prat Vermell including the ability to buy healthy food, the affordability of restaurants, the ability to compost, the space for market stalls, the ability to garden, the likelihood of existing businesses/residential complexes to support a garden, and the likelihood of different building types to produce food waste. 

– Student Final Study at Marina del prat Vermell: TBD, but I guess I’ll work on creating some sort of research framework that uses sensors to measure the relationship between air quality and food systems. 

 

What input sensors other than Purple Air (they use PMS7003) are possible?

– PMS5003 PM sensors, probably other arduino sensor options

What study plan is possible?

– It is possible to measure air quality in the neighborhood with sensors that pick up on levels of PM, NO2, etc.

Design Sensors for Architecture and Urbanism

SITUATED TECHNOLOGY IN THE URBANISM AND ARCHITECTURE AT SPACE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 7 years old

Where and how many PM sensors could be located in the future project?

– Any number. It would probably be good to have ones at any outdoor courtyards or at entrances/balconies.

OUTPUT

Where could that information be displayed and to whom?

– to residents or to the public on the facade or via an app

What expected behavioral change is possible?

– less opening of windows, less car traffic, less construction. 

What responsive technology could activate and to what purpose?

– maybe air filters turn on when levels hit a certain threshold to protect health

How is it communicated abstractly and comparative / absolute values (ex. color, light, time, etc), who uses the information and how do they make behavioral changes and or responsive technology changes.

– same as where it could be displayed and to whom- communicated in numbers

Next Steps
– Purple Air at La Chalmeta coop housing (2+ sensors)
Setup for collection immediately after Easter break. How can these sensors low and how and possibly others in other housing around Marina be used:

– They can be used to measure air pollution
