01_Tigard Air Quality and Urban Ecological Design Study:

  • The data represented in the reading (for school hours especially) represents what we would expect to see with peak pick up and drop off times really well. I see that the night time spikes were mentioned as possible changes due to wind and nearby mall traffic. I would be curious to dive further into that especially if kids at the school have after school activities that could expose them to these higher levels of air pollution
  • The location of the sensors seems to work extremely well for a smaller scope, but I would be interested to see if moving outside of the school grounds to major arteries that buses, cars, and bikes use could help narrow down where larger portions of the pollution comes from.
  • I think the idea of helping the teachers figure out the best times to open windows is something that could be impactful statewide across schools. Not all schools were built with air conditioning and filtration systems due to the past historic climate of Oregon. I think that as summer months approach and days get hotter, this will be especially important due to the cooling it can also provide.

02_Air Pollution Reduced Exposure Recommendations

  • The article does a good job conveying the impact of cars on air pollution as well as listing many different ways schools can try to avoid car use. I think reducing traffic on streets between home and school could also enable children to get out and play more. I think they would feel more comfortable walking and biking on streets with less car traffic.
  • If sand can create hazardous particulate matter and the only way to reduce this is by spraying the sand with water, should the sand just be considered to be removed? I know that drought can be severe and so it just seems like replacing sand with another softer material should be considered.
  • I agree with the implementation of plants on a school facade for numerous reasons. From the perspective of health, I think that foliage can definitely add another layer or layers of protection from air pollution. From an architectural perspective, I think it can add privacy to a school, while also making the street itself more interesting.
