Phenomenon of Place – Christian Norberg-Schulz
The word phenomena can mean tactile or observable instances within a design, but it can also relate to the feeling or experience one gains by being in said space. Place refers to the total phenomenology that occurs there, a qualitative measurement “designated by nouns.” Norbert-Schulz then discusses the Genius Loci of a place, something that we need to consider during our design. It is not just about what is seen when it comes to landscape design, it is also and perhaps more importantly about what is felt. Practicality is sometimes not enough, and by going above and beyond initial needs can produce beautiful spaces.
