Demonstrate the integration of arduino processor and sensor technology in your individual design intervention. How is information used to empower and support informed inhabitant behaviors and decisions?

The preliminary arduino development provided basis for the proposed co-llum urban network. Based on previous point-in-time data collection investigations, the design intervention acts upon existing collective flows and informal social spaces in the intersection area of C/ de Puigcerda and C/ de Venecuela.

Explain digital sensing information flow and public interaction (app, situated technology, invisible infrastructure on/off or gradient opening)

The co-llum is a beacon for an integrated care network that works to make care-giving visible in the public sphere by informing citizens of care opportunities and real-time environmental situations related to temperature.

Advanced Technology

  • Title of Individual Sensor project: Co-llum Network
  • What is the sensor technology, how does it relate to the qualities studied within the theoretical framework and phenomena, and who does it serve? (Please answer in one sentence): The Co-llum network (part of the proposed public care system) integrates temperature sensor technology to provide real-time visualization of environmental concerns related to heat for elderly communities caring for others and being cared for.

  • How is the sensor used by people:In addition to the on-site visualizations of temperature, the sensor data is open-source and can be accessed by individuals through a web-based application in line with the Ayuntament de Barcelona web applications for public amenities and services.

Sensor/s used:

The sensors used in the on-site data collection informed the individual intervention concept temperature kit. This kit combines a dht sensor element, an SD card to collect data remotely, and an LCD to visualize data collection real-time.

Interaction location:

Network data and real-time temperature information can be accessed through a mobile application as part of the municipal app service.

Actuation:

Information – The intervention provides a visualization of temperature data but can also be implemented in resiliency measure during extreme weather events. The visualizations on the bench/buffer structures and the co-llum beacon allows for elderly to interact with their care environment both on-site and remotely through the mobile app.

Information Type:

The beacon emits auditory and visual information through color and chirps. The bench/buffer structure provides numerical temperature information.

Interaction Type Variable (Parameter):

Sensor off-event: late evenings or low activity levels. Activity is captured through location information collected by the mobile app.

Sensor on-event: daytime, typical/high activity levels. The numerical temperature data actualizes from the sensor feed and provides numerical change as well as visual feedback of change.
