Toward New Horizons in Architecture
Tadao Ando

Ando’s perspective frames the role of the architect in overcoming the impasse formed by the modernist movement. I appreciated his definition of abstraction as an organization of the real. I was particularly impressed by his establishment of a union between nature and human life and his call for mutual permeation of physical boundaries. In Ando’s view, the role of the architect is to transform nature through abstraction. The relationship between architecture and landscape informs the sustained sense of tension between people and nature. I value his way of thinking and I would be curious to see the logic applied in informal and transitional settlements along international borders, spaces where nature is often disregarded or disrespected. With global displacement increasing, architects have a responsibility to design for adaptation.
