Design Intervention

  1. Research questions
    1. How can space be fully optimized for multi use/multi-purpose community spaces?
    2. How can the furniture of community spaces become multi-purpose/multi-use?
  2. Abstract
    1. The design intervention in Sant Andreu Poblenou, at the intersection of Carrer de Sant Andreu and Carrer de Campeny, aims to fuse the culture around the street and be able to provide for a social cohesion. The sensory phenomenal of the Social cohesion design intervention is the human fit; how does one design a place that promotes and establishes social cohesion in a community. This strategy serves the community of Sant Andreu, more specifically, locals along and around the street of Carrer de Campeny and Carrer de Sant Andreu.
    2. The media/methods that will be used to investigate the design process is that of a physical model. This will allow for the study of how a space can affect the site and allow for a sense of spacing and surroundings. Another method that could be used is measuring sound, in order to determine how active the space is.
      1. Steps for Physical Model
        1. Make a model
        2. Test different iterations of furniture placement and usage
      2. Steps for Measuring sound
        1. Record sound on a voice app or simply on video camera
        2. Go to site and measure and record sound
  1. Background theory
  1. The Phenomenon of Place
    1. emphasizes the idea of any real presence is intimately linked with a character. In terms of social cohesion of a space, the presence of the community is linked to many characters. For example, the presence of a community can be sparked through a connection with nature, or simply having a seating area, shading, etc.
  2. Toward New Horizon in Architecture by Tadao Ando
    1.  The reading also talked about place and understanding a site’s traditions, living patterns and customs, which is important in terms of analyzing a space that provides a potential of social cohesion.

    1. “When a work of architecture successfully fuses a building and situation, a third condition emerges.” Steven Holl describes the concept of linking architecture and site to create successful design work that works well alongside one another. The design intervention in question aims to successfully interpret this concept from Steven Holl
  1. Contextualization
    1. Yejin Southeast Cultural Plaza

    2. Juxta Skate-able Art Plaza
  2. Methods
    1. Giph
    2. iMovie to put videos of sound together
  3. How to test interventions
    1. Observe and record the different sounds throughout a busy time period
  4. Expected outcomes
    1. The expected outcomes are that by creating a space in the street for public expression (protests, dancing, food, music, etc.) then it will create a safe space for the community to gather and enjoy each other’s presence. The different sounds would create different experiences, but most activities held here would create a sense of curiosity.
