“Urban Processes and the Human-Scale: Measuring social interaction at pedestrian-scaled Superilles in Barcelona, Portland and Eugene,”  //  writing assignment,  3 paragraphs

  1. Describe the general theoretical framework evolved from Salvador Rueda about Social Interaction and Cohesion (use, infrastructure, demographics). Consider going to the website BCNecologia but only for background – you will not find specific information to this there.

The general theoretical framework evolved from Salvador Rueda about social interaction and cohesion revolves around “cities as interacting processes of land use, livability, mobility, urban complexity, biodiversity, metabolism, social interaction, and policy, instead of the traditional planning notions of only land use, transit, and policy (Rueda et al 2012). (Speranza, 2014)”. Demographics includes Age categories, and Cultural representation, an Infrastructure includes categories of IT, Transit, and Basic Needs.

  1. Describe two to three urban qualitieswithin the primary social interaction categories and find how they are measured in the circle diagrams. Identify an associated ecological phenomena such as air, water and heat/light.

Two Urban qualities measured within the circle diagram includes items like Water Access, Shelter, Toilet Access. Shelter ranked the lowest with little public shelter, and otherwise stable toilet and water access seem to have a sharp variance. Ecological indicators such as vegetation health was almost non-existent. From a cause and effect scenario based on the qualitative data taken, you could predict how density (space), could be effected by jobs (services), and then effecting things ice access to water or cost of living. They are all tied to one another.

  1. Describe one example of a pattern that emerged in Barcelona relating a comparison between a Superilla and a comparative space such as Gracia or Enric de Granados.

One example of a recurring trend in a Superilla, Gracia, and Enric de Granados includes when there was much exterior seating, vegetation health was better, yet all had nearly nonexistent shelter space. This is an important factor for regulating temperature, and providing space for houseless communities.
