Greeks denounce Albanian trial of mayor-elect as political
Greece’s ruling New Democracy party suffered a setback in the runoff elections for regional governors and mayors, losing the country’s two largest cities and five of the six regional contests. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis aimed to win all 13 regions plus Athens, Thessaloniki, and Piraeus. The first round results consolidated New Democracy’s political dominance.
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that a decision will impact the EU’s relationship with Albania, which relies on European rules and the rule of law. The case overshadows recent improvements and has turned down five applications for his release or sworn in.
