New Student Survey

I’ve answered some questions put forth by Eric Schiff to introduce myself to the course and to others in the class.

 

Where did you move from to attend the UO? And, briefly describe how you landed on the UO AAD program. Any interesting, funny, anecdotal stories/details are welcome.

I moved from Anchorage, Alaska to attend the UO. I became interested in museum studies and arts management as an undergraduate anthropology major conducting museum archaeology. I also worked in museums in various positions, and decided to pursue it further in a graduate degree program in the Pacific Northwest.

 

Area of concentration in AAD?

I am working on a concentration in museum studies.

 

Describe your knowledge and use of technology systems.

I am honestly probably not as technologically savvy as some of my peers, but I know technology will be an increasingly critical tool in the 21^st century. I use internet navigation on a daily basis to complete homework and readings, and keep up to date with social media and world news.

 

What software do you commonly use? Briefly describe purpose/application for software on your list.

I use Microsoft Office a good bit for both academic and work purposes, such as writing papers and making grant spending spreadsheets. I recently started using Mimsy and Lightroom for museum collection work.

 

Do you have any graphic design or media production/management experience? Have you taken any graphic design or media production courses?

I have taken arts courses and one in two dimensional design, which I hope will be helpful in visual layout work.

 

Know anything about typography?

I know very little about typography, except that it falls under the umbrella of art because it is used to express emotion and convey meaning. Typography is interesting to me, and I would like to learn more about how to further the message using typography as an artistic element.

 

Do you use Web (2.0) apps? Name those that you use or are familiar with.

I use Gmail and Pinterest.

 

Do you use Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Vine, Yelp, etc.)? Name those that you engage in.

I use Facebook and Snapchat.

 

Tell me something unique about yourself.

I spent summers on the extremely rural south end Kodiak Island with no electricity, plumbing, or cars, which is why I had so much time for art!

 

Anything else?

I’m excited to learn more about visual media and marketing because I believe branding is essential and practical, and a skill not always taught in undergraduate courses.
