Who is She?

Hellen Fisher is an anthropologist.

She conducted an experiment where she put thirty two people who claimed to be in love inside an MRI brain scanner. Seventeen participants had their love returned, while fifteen had just been dumped.

She looked at their brains while the participants looked at a picture of their beloved.

Fisher asked them all questions while they were in the scanner. Some examples:

  • “What percentage of the day and night do you think about the person you love?”
  • “Would you die for this person?”

Everyone answered that they thought about their beloved all the time.

Everyone casually said that they would die for their beloved.

What Did She Find?

She found that when she asked the questions and when the participants looked at a picture of their beloved many different parts of the brain would light up. (For more information on what happens in the brain go to the “Love at First Sight?” Page).

She realized that when people are in love the brain does the same thing as if it were on drugs such as Cocaine.

There are three different stages of love: Sex Drive/Lust, Romantic Love, and Attachment.

Sex Drive/Lust: this is when a person is looking at a range of partners and are not necessarily looking for long term commitment.

Romantic Love: this a drive, not a feeling or emotion as commonly mistaken. It is stronger than that of the sex drive. It is when people are focusing their mating energy one one person.

Attachment: this is described by Hellen Fisher as the toleration of another human long enough to create a child. It is where the chemical levels have gone down and people start to lose the “feeling” of being in love.
