The only thing that was really comparable between Dylan and Zeid’s Thanksgiving experiences was the excitement for the following day, Black Friday. The day is full of sales and practically steals at a number of stores, whether it be an electronics store or a clothing store. Although, Zeid does not participate in the celebration of Thanksgiving, he has no hesitation in participating in Black Friday shopping.
Video Games
Much like the music the group had a very similar taste in video games. Fifa the EA sports soccer game was the one that stuck out the most. Fifa ties into the theme of Thanksgiving because of the in-game events that take place where you can acquire Thanksgiving packs which can be redeemed for an in-game reward. Even the video game world will use Thanksgiving for profit.
Social Media
Unrelated to the other posts in this exhibition, I saw many instagram and twitter posts of people giving thanks to their friends and family, rather than personally showing their gratitude to these people they post for the world to see. Showing that Thanksgiving has become less of holiday and more of just another thing that people can post on their social media.
Music
Zeid and Anshul being foreigners where as Dylan and I are from the United States you would expect a slight difference in music taste yet throughout the night we had typically the same taste in music listening to the newest music and even comparing our tastes when it came to some of the classics. If there were any Thanksgiving themed rap/rnb music they probably would not have been played.
Fridge
In the fridge we have a mix of Zeid and Dylan’s nights. Both brought home leftovers from their meals. In a way it shows the differences in the cultures, the Indian food shows Zeid’s lack of Thanksgiving experience and the absence of Thanksgiving in his culture, where as Dylan’s leftovers of turkey and mash potatoes, staple Thanksgiving foods, that show his continuous celebration of Thanksgiving, or at least the presence of the holiday in his culture.
Indian Food
Zeid finds an Indian place that is open, approximately a five minute walk from our dorm so we decide to go there and eat. We order the chicken tikka masala along with the garlic naan which would probably not be considered your average Thanksgiving dinner, nonetheless it was delicious. The restaurant was crowded, full of other people who seemingly did not celebrate Thanksgiving or had no plans to attend.
Pumpkin Pie
After Zeid returns from getting the Indian food he reveals that he has never tried pumpkin pie, luckily Dylan has brought back a slice from his Thanksgiving dinner. Zeid proceeds to try the pumpkin pie and after a few bites he comes to the conclusion that it is neither good or bad. He says he is not a big fan of pumpkin flavored items.
Staying Warm
Zeid throws on his staple puffer jacket in an attempt to battle the weather conditions of the Thanksgiving Day. It is raining heavily, it is also quite windy and around high thirty degrees in Fahrenheit. Zeid is getting dressed to go pick up food nearby. He checks his phone and calls multiple restaurants to see which are open after a failed postmates order.
Coming Home
Dylan has finished the Thanksgiving feast and dessert after. He uses his phone to order and uber back to the kalipuya dorms where he will meet up with Zeid and I. The costs are high and the number of drivers is limited because many of the drivers in Eugene are presumably at home with their families and friends enjoying the holiday.
Hot Chocolate
After Zeid has tended to all his chores/responsibilities he makes himself a cup of hot chocolate, which happens to be one of his favorite drinks for this time of year. Since Thanksgiving isn’t celebrated in Jordan, the next holiday he looks forward to is Christmas. He says the the hot chocolate reminds of Christmas and just the overall holiday atmosphere of that time of year.
