Our Project Overview and Mission Statement!

Hello! We are ArtisTree- where there are no mistakes, just happy little algorithms. Our goal is to harness and build upon creativity and is a great resource for both students and teachers to learn about combining art and technology. Art is incredibly important to harnessing creative thinking, problem solving, exploration and is a vital source for expression. Technology is becoming more and more present in both education and today’s world, and digital art is a great resource to develop the innovative, creative, and technological thinkers of tomorrow! Our mission is to create 5 Lesson Plans to combine art and technology for 5th graders using the following Arizona State standards: 5.AP.M.1: Subconcept: Modularity (M), 5.AP.A.1: Subconcept: Algorithms (A), and 5.AP.C.1: Subconcept: Control. Algorithms are essential for understanding the importance of following steps to achieve a desired result. These lessons will cover basic art skills through color mixing and algorithmic layering. Algorithms apply to art in the sense of color mixing, and understanding the layout of a piece- such as foreground, middle ground, and background. For example, algorithms are present when creating a piece of art, the sky’s the background, followed by a tree trunk, then leaves and apples. Through the internet resource Scratch, students will manipulate objects through using algorithmic critical reasoning skills to create a desired layered photo. Students will recognize, develop, and demonstrate understanding of different algorithmic processes, ordering, and varying levels of efficiency of different algorithmic approaches. At the end of the lesson, students will demonstrate understanding of algorithms through creating an art landscape scene by incorporating their newfound knowledge of both primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, and foreground, middle ground, and background on Scratch, as well as produce a written algorithmic order of their design process so their work can be accurately replicated by someone else. We look forward to harnessing student creativity while building on their understanding of computer science and sequencing that they can apply to their everyday life!
