Field Guides:

See Diigo for example Field Guide examples.

Some second year students’ blogs have their field guides posted.

Field guide is an annotated text that helps people identify. We are using in class metaphorically to support course content and purpose.

Two from last year:

Stephanie Moore’s field guide to DIY Chicken Coops

Phillip Carnahan’s field guide to bridges on the Oregon coast – created in Prezzi.

Field guides people in class are currently thinking of: Fallen Fruit Map, Tap Shoes, Bicycle leg straps, something about Food, possibilities associated with Saturday Market, cup cakes. John and Doug are open to anything. We will help you scale it.

Sustainable Cities Initiative Field Guide: Should not take more time than the other field guide assignment. John and Doug will meet with  group.

Class Discussion:

What do we mean by transmedia? See Henry Jenkins work on course site and in Diigo group.

What are your understandings of transmedia? Multisensory. Multiple perspectives. Ecology of the mind.

Transmedia new way of thinking – possibly moves away for core and supplemental.

Participation:

See work of Komar and Melamid – transmedia and participatory (critique of participatory process)

Learning to Love You More project by Harrell Fletcher as participation and art as social practice. learningtoloveyoumore.com

Importance of keeping in mind that sustainability has a cultural / participatory component.

Fletcher’s work promotes work for artists in community outside of gallery / studio experience. Artists operating outside non-traditional contexts. Money and employment for artists in exchange for work in community. Integration of where artists do their work and public – questioning rarefied notions of what art is and where it is experienced.  Integration of art into daily life? Fletcher doesn’t see art as a change mechanism. He says he just makes art – he learns from community to make his own art. (Paraphrased from Fletcher). Is it a repackaging of traditional arts practice?

Learning to Love You More is arts based, but is it arts biased? Anyone could participate. Anyone can make art?

SF MOMA acquired it. What does that mean?

How to operationalize participation so that there is a true engagement?

For example, art ecosystem created by Root Division.

Experimental Station – inspirational. Arts based but not arts biased (Fenn quote).

Students breaking into groups to amplify project in some way.

More and more examples of curation as art. Reference to “Found” foundmagazine.com

Examples to class prompt:

buy a stranger a cup of coffee (the person behind you) and document their reaction (random acts of kindness)

create a hot dog and take a picture of eating it (commonality/community/sociality of humanity)

video of singing a ballad about your worst break up

make a sandwich for some one else and then they would make a sandwich for you.

shave someone’s head (public dual nature of supporting and exposing)

sing karoke with a stranger

See relational aesthetics

Not about getting people to do something, but instead build a relationship
