The belief that cultural rights are a human right has been circulating within the United States for at least a century and is sometimes referred to as cultural democracy. Cultural democracy has come to be defined by a loose set of principles, rights and freedoms. A nation that is culturally democratic is one where there is no “official” culture. Adults, youth, and children are guaranteed the right to their own history, free and equitable access to culture, tradition, education, public speech, and the construction of culture. There is recognition of cross-cultural shared values, attitudes, and beliefs. Bill Ivey acknowledges that the concept of cultural democracy is foundational to his “Cultural Bill of Rights.”

How does art and participation with art manifest within a cultural democracy?

To respond to this question your task is to curate a transmedia exhibit/experience of at least seven to ten examples. The text supporting your exhibit/experience should provide your response to the question above as well as a rationale for your choices. This text should conceptualize a definition of art and arts participation within a cultural democracy. Be sure to draw on writings and other resources that we have examined in class in order to contextualize and illustrate your approach. There is no set number of sources we want you to reference, and since this is an essay it should demonstrate a logical argument toward a goal that represents your group’s collective thinking; it needn’t be laden with outside citations, but should address relevant ones as needed.

Situate your exhibit/experience in one of the four quadrants associated with Clifford’s Art-Culture System and provide a rationale for your choice. Another option is to “mash-up” Clifford’s model in some way creating a new context for the exhibit/experience and provide a rationale for the mash-up.
