Just ran across this post on the Technology in the Arts blog (well worth following…) about a new “arts participation” endeavor anchored in Australia. The effort is called “What Makes Me” and can be found here. It’s an ambitious and engaging digital storytelling initiative fronted by a company (Wanted Digital) and backed by a council (Australia Council for the Arts). Begs many questions, but seeks to address a basic one: what does the arts mean to individuals across Australia?
Following on our discussions last week in class (and looking ahead to tomorrow), can we imagine something like this in the U.S.? It’s not an overtly political effort, but does have national backing and scope. What are some of the other issues/questions embedded in this effort?
What constitutes participation in the arts? I think about this question often, and today, found this article. I haven’t quite learned how to embed hyperlinks into the comment section of WordPress, so to read the article, you will have to do the old-fashioned copy-and-paste.

Are we free to constitute any and all things as art? Thoughts?
