Cultural democracy has come to be defined by a loose set of principles, rights and freedoms coalescing around the idea that a culturally democratic nation is one where no “official” culture exists, and all citizens have guaranteed rights to their own history, free and equitable access to culture, tradition, education, public speech, and the construction of culture. Within this concept is recognition of cross-cultural shared values, attitudes, and beliefs informing expressive life and identity. Bill Ivey acknowledges that the concept of cultural democracy—almost a century old within the U.S.—is foundational to his “Cultural Bill of Rights,” and it is a concept that underlies much debate and discussion around issues such as multicultural education and cultural competency.
How does participation with art/culture manifest within a cultural democracy? What is the relationship of cultural democracy to arts/culture engagement, and how can arts workers (advocates, administrators, managers, etc) cultivate this relationship?
To respond to this question your task is to curate a transmedia exhibit/experience of seven to ten examples. The written essay supporting your exhibit/experience should provide your response to the questions above as well as a rationale for your choices of curated items. This text should conceptualize a definition of arts/culture participation within a cultural democracy, and also articulate aspects of the relationship between cultural democracy and arts engagement. Be sure to draw on writings and other resources that we have examined through class in order to contextualize and illustrate your approach. There is no set number of sources for you to reference, and since this is an essay it should demonstrate a logical argument toward a goal that represents your group’s collective thinking; it needn’t be laden with outside citations, but should address relevant ones as needed.
