Staying Safe Online: Essential Tips for Students

The internet opens up a world of opportunities, but it also comes with risks. As a student, it’s important to take steps to protect your privacy, security, and wellbeing when online. Follow these essential tips to stay safe while making the most of the digital world.

Use Strong Passwords

Using weak, easy-to-guess passwords makes it simple for hackers to access your accounts. You need to create lengthy, complex passwords that are unique for each important account. Aim for at least 12 characters mixing upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Consider using a password manager app like LastPass or 1Password to generate and remember your strong passwords for each account. But be sure to use an extremely strong master password for unlocking the password manager itself. Unique and complex passwords are one of your best defenses against cybercriminals.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA) provides an extra layer of security beyond just a password. It requires you to enter a secondary one-time code from another device, like your phone, when logging in. Activate 2FA on important accounts like email, banking, social media, and university portals. The minor hassle is worth the enhanced protection.

Beware of Phishing Scams

Cybercriminals are getting very sophisticated at creating fake emails, texts, and websites designed to steal your login credentials and personal information through phishing. Be wary of any unsolicited messages asking you to update or verify account information. Go directly to the legitimate website instead of clicking any links. And look for slight differences in web addresses like “amazon.co” instead of “.com”.

Use a VPN

A virtual private network (VPN) encrypts your internet connection and hides your IP address and online activities. This prevents hackers on public Wi-Fi from snooping on you. A VPN also allows access to geo-restricted content. Look for VPN Black Friday deals to sign up affordably.

Update Your Devices and Software

Maintaining devices and software with the latest security updates is critical for patching vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit. Enable automatic updates on your laptop, phone, apps, and operating systems. And be sure to back up your data regularly in case any devices get lost, stolen or infected with ransomware.

Be Wary of Public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi networks at coffee shops, airports, hotels and other locations are convenient but often not very secure. Avoid accessing sensitive accounts like banking or university portals over public Wi-Fi, even if there is a password. The data can still be intercepted. At minimum use a VPN if you need to use public networks.

Protect Your Online Accounts

Your university accounts contain highly sensitive personal data like financial information, grades, and more. Use the strongest login credentials possible for these accounts and set up 2FA. Monitor the accounts regularly for any suspicious activity. And avoid accessing university accounts and information on public devices or networks.

Watch Out for Cyberbullying

Online harassment, abuse, and bullying are growing problems. Don’t engage with any suspicious profiles trying to befriend you on social media. Block abusive accounts and report concerning behaviors through official channels. The university’s IT department and counseling services can provide support and resources if you’re dealing with cyberbullying.

Prioritize Digital Wellbeing

It’s easy to get pulled into the nonstop digital world which can negatively impact mental health, relationships and sleep. Set healthy boundaries by putting devices away for set times, turning off notifications, unplugging before bed, and taking regular social media and internet breaks. Don’t let technology rule your life.

Staying safe online does require more awareness and effort. But following these tips will help UO students smartly unlock the benefits of connectivity while avoiding the potential dangers. Focus first on privacy, security, and positive habits, then enjoy exploring everything the online world has to offer.
