Mariah, I always knew you were doing an educational project, but never really understood the specifics. After taking a closer look at your thesis document I like what you are working on.
Your problem has been clearly addressed, an understanding/connection with nature can prove difficult when attending school in an urban setting(sorry if i have interpreted it differently than you may have intended). I think you should revisit your first sentence, it took me a few reads to really figure out what you were getting at. Although urban schools may boast that the city being their classroom, i dont think they would fight you in saying that the urban classroom is perfect in fulfilling all areas of curriculum. So you may want to drop that part.
The program you have selected is interesting in that it is very specific. I think it makes a lot of sense to take something that currently exists as one room (SERC) and beginning to expand upon it by making it a facility unto itself. So nice response. That being said That really justifies your site choice adjacent to OMSI.
I remember you asking if you should take the planned park into consideration when continuing with your thesis. I feel like since it is a park and not like a mixed use development or an OMSI expansion that it is fine that you use it for your projects site. If anything you should be using your thesis to say that your project would be better suited for this site then some stupid park. Maybe you try to find a way to compromise and use your landscaped component of your project to function as a public park as well. So this way it is win win.
Lastly, Since your project is about educating science teachers and possibly students/visitors of OMSi with a focus of “science in an urban environment” the building should really start to speak to what this means. Right now I try to imagine your project as being built and I think; 1. ok program makes sense, seems like it is answering a reasonable dilemma, 2. SIte makes sense next to OMSI plays off of OMSI existing program great. 3. The types of spaces that come to mind make me think of a typical community college wing, or a campus building. How can you begin to tailor the program in such a way that it calls for new and exciting spaces that reinforce/showcase the learning of science in the urban environment?
I apologize if you have thought of this already or if its somewhere in your thesis document and I didnt understand it. Just my first initial feelings. youve got a really good start.
