This website communicates ideas from Nancy Cheng and Suenn Ho’s Advanced Architectural Design studio at the University of Oregon. Our class is looking at resolving tensions between a building’s role in its urban context and its relationship to nature.
Nancy Cheng (B.A. Yale, M.Arch. Harvard, RA, LEED AP) directs UO’s Portland Architecture Program where she teaches architectural design and computer methods. She researches how tools shape the design thinking and learning communities. She is interested in maximizing creative engagement through sketching, handcraft and material properties combined with digital modeling and simulation processes. From studios on sustainable housing, she has amassed strong eco-design resources and community connections Nancy has taught for 16 years in Hong Kong and Oregon after 8 years in Boston firms. She leads the Association of Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) and has chaired the national AIA Technology in Architectural Practice group. email nywc at uoregon dot edu
Suenn Ho (B.A. Williams, M.Arch. Columbia), is a Senior Designer at MulvannyG2 Architecture. Her Portland design projects include the 15-story Pacific Tower in Chinatown, the West Linn Public Library and the Astoria Chinese Heritage Park. In Old Town/Chinatown she designed the development plan and streetscape project and its decorative bronze sidewalk plaques. She has taught terminal studios at Oregon and studios at Columbia College in New York and Univ. of Hong Kong and practiced in Boston, Pittsburgh, New York City, France and Hong Kong.
