The final before the final.

It’s officially time to start working solely towards the final presentation, and I’m now officially excited! Based on my thoughts stemming from the jurors comments, there are a few things I need to work out (and QUICKLY!) before I start to consider my final media and start production. One big comment was that my landscaping doesn’t reflect the subversive nature of the rest of the project. A few suggestions were thrown out. One being that since the landscaping doesn’t add much to the project I could just jettison a large part of the lawn and have a smaller site. The idea of a living machine as lawn space was proposed to treat water and recycle it back into the building. The direction I feel like I’m heading towards upon the writing of this blogpost is to turn the lawn into a series of filter gardens for the storm water, which could speak about the myriad of toxins being flushed into the river by storm water and WHY we as a city need to address the issues this causes. Perhaps I would plant trees in every available lawn space leftover in order to speak to an ideally functional landscape, a landscape free of useless, resource-wasting grass. (If we aren’t providing habitat, we should use the landscape to better our environment in more ways than just visual. If we don’t even do that, what is the POINT?!) Other comments included thinking about how the atrium roof deals with stack ventilation and water protection concurrently (How does the shading work? Can they be closed and still allow for air movement? The spring months can be warm AND rainy, so how does the glazing open to vent air and still give some protection from the rain? Finally, I got some feedback on diagrams I could include: conditioned versus unconditioned space (Definitely!) and a program use diagram as it relates specifically to daylighting/heating (also a very good idea!). I also decided I should somehow include “reflective surfaces” in my daylighting section in order to explain how I’m getting light down into the lower floors.

A quick timeline of goals:

by tomorrow the 11th: I want to have a clear idea of what to do with the landscape and why I’ve done it.

thursday: I want to figure out what set of media I’ll use at the final. Layers? Obviously. (In the words of someone, paraphrased by my father, ‘can’t fight city hall’. Well you can, but in this case, I’m city hall and WHO WOULD WANT TO FIGHT LITTLE OLD ME?! So many layers on so many levels.) matte-sprayed acetate? printed vellum/mylar? collaging? all of the above?

thursday/friday: Consider my argument for the metaphorical basis of the building. I need to expand the idea to allow it to cover every element in my building, but simultaneously be concise.

after that: Produce stuff! Make models!

(Dudes, I should totally be done by Saturday. No problem.)
