First, some general comments that came from jurors at the review today. Based on their feedback, I feel like I’m on the right track for the most part. Exposed metal angle trusses are the “new” structure and support themselves and glazing, a metal support structure for the existing brick wall will double to support the walkways and floors. The conventional concrete slabs will end up sitting on angles attached to the large trusses to allow for room in seismic situations. One issue I have to address is tracing the weather barrier and the manner in which I envision the exhibition spaces beneath the bridge: I’d like the structure of the bridge to act as the ceiling for the space, and since I’m uninterested in altering the bridge, it will be difficult to condition that space. I’m leaning towards leaving it unconditioned and finding a way to make that space inhabitable all year round. Also the structural relevance of looking into Frank Gehry’s building at Case Western was mentioned, I’ll have to check that out.
