So having read the introduction and main goals with the Thesis, I’ve picked out two sites. Both are from my hometown of Milwaukee, WI. While I’m attending school in Portland, Oregon, it is still important to choose a site which I feel strongly about and have some connections with. I know the area quite well, have seen the changes it has undergone in the last 10-12 years, and know the history of the city and region. All this background knowledge will better prepare me for some of the larger urban and environmental issues that may come up.
So the first of the two sites is located along the Milwaukee River. Both sites are in close proximity to nature, a prerequisite of the studio in choosing sites. Site one is located amongst many old and in some cases derelict, industrial buildings. There is a personal allure to reusing and reflecting the heritage of these buildings into my project, thus making this site a good selection. This area has seen a lot of revitalization in the past 7 years or so, mostly condos and retail. The vertical farm is industrial in nature (cleaner industrial, at least) and could be something new and inspirational to this region.
More analysis will follow at some future point.
