For my materials research, I’ve decided to expand upon the very quick “micro study” from earlier in the quarter. For that study, I looked at adaptive fritted glass and light studies with origami paper. For this research, I’ve decided to mesh those two into one category which I’m calling “light and transparency”. All these materials I’ve found on the Transmaterial website, which Mariah posted earlier in the semester. I’m quite sure I won’t be using all these materials, but I feel like having a small amount of background on this array of materials may give me a clear idea about the specific quality of the materials I’ll design into the final product.
from Transmaterial.net:
Transparency–
-wired glass- safety glass which is inherently fritted (bird-friendly and for privacy) and doubles as decorative. Example: Deco Wired Glass
-glass flooring- glass which comes in different colors and textures that meets friction and structural requirements for flooring. Example: UltraGlasFlooring
-insulating, diffusing glass- glass with a good u-value that insulates better than traditional insulating glass and also diffuses sunlight for better coverage inside. Example: Solera or Kapilux
-recycled glass- sustainably-minded, repurposed glass made from post-industrial waste and post-consumer products which doubles as decorative. Example: Recycled Crystal Glass
Light–
-interior lighting from sunlight- technology that allows sunlight (through varied means) to be transmitted efficiently to interior spaces and act as the predominant source of light. Example: Sunlight Tubes or Tsola
-flexible, luminous space dividers- a flexible, tactile, modular system of honeycomb material (which can be used horizontally or vertically) can be used to divide space, light it through integrated LEDs, and can be free-standing as well. Example: Softwall LED
