I’ve been struggling before the second review. The biggest problem I had was how I got to where I was at the first review. There seems to be the disconnection between what I was trying to do and everything I had so far. I didn’t know how to solve the problem, and so it was hard to move forward.
I finally had a crit with friend from different studio who didn’t know my project. Basically went through everything I’ve done so far and why I made the decisions I’ve made. That helped me get rid of things that didn’t make sense, and helped confirming certain moves.
My project is about time, and so I made a list to myself of things I want to explore within the concept of ‘time’
– The sequence: each theater is its own sequence connects together by the circulation path.
– The transformation: physical changes in different season and the effects of water level to the building.
– The light: day vs. night
– Nature and materials:
Every drawings I produced for the midterm review was basically to communicate all of the ideas above. They are by no means perfect since I was still designing and trying to imagine what they look like at the same time. However, I think they worked pretty well both for me to see how my project could look like and for the reviewer to somewhat understand what I mean when I mention all of those things in my list.
One thing I wish I put on the board was the site information and site context. All of which I already had. I only put the first model/diagram of the site which became helpful, but obviously not enough when trying to explain the project to people who are not familiar with the area. Luckily, all of my reviewers live in Portland so I got away with it. Lesson learned for next time.
My review went pretty well. For the first time I felt like I actually know what I’m doing. So, that’s a big relief. I’ve got good suggestions on things I should work on some more and other things I haven’t actually thought of. Especially, engaging the water into the building. Not only the river, but the water runoffs from the street.
I will post better quality images tomorrow.
