Post Midterm

The feedback from the jury was reasonable and expected, especially after reviewing the drawings after hearing their thoughts. One major issue that came up was the manner that I expressed the character of the site came off as being less subversive and inspired by the subculture and the skatepark and more modern, “established” and art museum-y. The word “corporate” wasn’t used, and perhaps not even implied, but I heard it anyway. I agreed, the drawings are too cute. I should take more of the reality of the industrial site and express it in the drawings. I should also show the art element more obviously, show something that lets the viewer see what the motivation for the space is. Not much was said about the design except I should analyze why I placed program elements where I did. Also, the elements of mutability and interaction are largely missing from the drawings. Why motivates people to interact in this space? How and where does it happen? This is going to be the first thing I tackle when continuing design. Once I get a good handle on this issue (and hopefully I will!), I’ll move on to experiment with drawing/rendering/collaging techniques that express the site and design more realistically.

We were given an evaluation sheet that I’ve filled out about our progress at midterms. 0 is not started to 1o being totally complete.

ITEMS

-Urban Design – CONCEPT DIAGRAM (in Plan and in Section) [7]

-Urban Design – SITE PLAN w context [10]
-Urban Design – SITE SECTION w context [8]
-Architectural Design –  PARTI DIAGRAM – Design Concept in Plan
and in Section or a 3-D diagram [9]
-Architectural Design – BUILDING PLANS (must be able to delineate
the difference between exterior walls, interior partitions,
glazing/windows, doors, primary program space, secondary program
space, supporting program space (back-of-house service
components).  Must delineate design ideas of structural concept of
the building as well as design ideas of relevant outdoor space. [9]
-Architectural Design – BUILDING SECTIONS (address design ideas
similar to item #5)  [9]
-Two 3-D FREEHAND VIGNETTES (indoor, outdoor) that address
interior and exterior elevation design ideas [10]
-Examples of MATERIAL EXPLORATION that is relevant to your
project as well as Photo IMAGES OF SITE/Cultural context [7]
-A WRITTEN ABSTRACT of your design concept (approx. 250
words) [10]
-SKETCH MODELS that exemplify your latest design exploration
(one at the urban scale, one at a building scale) [8]

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

-ORGANIZATION : Develop the spatial order expressing an
architectural idea, Program and site response translated into a spatial
hierarchy. Building plan and section with circulation and major
spatial relationships. [8]
-EXPERIENCE : Articulate user profiles, test the spatial sequence
through their eyes. Sheltered enclosure vs. openness to light. Study
models, Interior & exterior perspective sequences (rendered with light
to evoke the emotional tone) due at pinup. [8]
-FACADE : How does the building present itself to the public? How
does it mediate the indoor/outdoor relationship through skins,
canopies, transitions, etc. Multiple sketch iterations and at least three
2 1/2 D shadow studies. Great opportunity for parametric variation. [8]
-TECTONICS : Select the building system, sketch out the framing.
Look at how a typical joint could bring together structure, skin and
light, considering material qualities. [7]
